The 24th and final qualifier for Poland 2014 – clinching their place in July after beating Dominican Republic in the NORCECA playoff – Puerto Rico are making a third successive appearance at the World Championships.
They finished 12th in 2006 and 13th four years ago in Italy. It is their fourth appearance overall, having also qualified in 1974 when they finished in 23rd place. A finish in the top half of the rankings would be considered a success for a country that has only recently begun to appear regularly on the world stage.
Since their return to the World Championship in 2006 the Puerto Ricans have qualified for one World Cup (2007) and made their first World League appearance (2011).
In the most recent NORCECA Championship they finished fourth, and in the 2014 World League they finished bottom of Pool G of Group 3 and 27th overall in only their second appearance at the event.
The nation’s high in major international play came in 2007, when they took silver at both the NORCECA Championship and Pan American Cup.
